How to grow an avocado tree
You don’t need sunny climes to grow this exotic plant
After eating an avocado, pierce the stone with three toothpicks around the circumference.
Now balance the stone, half submerged in water, on the rim of a glass and leave somewhere warm inside your house.
After roots and shoots begin to sprout (within two to six weeks) you can pot the seed in a small planter with rich, peat free compost.
With careful pruning and repotting for growth, your avocado plant can grow as tall as 20m high.
It may not bear fruit within the first ten years – or ever – so perhaps don’t bank on a lifetime supply of fresh guacamole, just an enjoyable gardening project.
