Eight of the best garden games for sunny days

While away an unseasonably warm autumn afternoon with these lively outdoor pastimes

A quintessentially English game that can be played on the village green – or your back garden.

Why we love it
The sound of leather on willow, grass stains on cricket whites, a ripple of applause… and afternoon tea.

The downside
Play can be a little slow and drawn out for younger players, so you might want to opt for the French version (with underarm bowling).

Our favourite
Paul Smith Cricket Ball (but it could be tricky to polish and there may be a risk of stripey stains).

Credit crunch option
Of course, any bat and any ball would surely do. And yet somehow, it’s just not cricket.
