The Secret Of Moonacre

Magical adventure tale

Posted: 4 March 2009
by Helen McKay-Ferguson

FOLLOWING THE DEATH of her father, young Maria Merryweather is sent to live at the remote Moonacre Manor with her brooding uncle, Sir Benjamin. Her one treasure is an ancient book, that has been left to her by her late father, which tells of a moon princess, a lost set of pearls, and a malevolent curse which threatens the future of her family. Maria soon acquires a faithful band of animal friends at her uncle’s property, including Periwinkle the Pony and Serena the Hare. Together, they set out to find the lost pearls and break the curse of Moonacre while trying not to fall foul of their menacing neighbour, Coeur De Noir.
Adapted from The Little White Horse, Elizabeth Goudge’s classic novel, the film is full of special effects and boasts fine performances, notably by Dakota Blue Richards as Maria and Juliet Stevenson as the eccentric Miss Heliotrope.  The spirit of Goudge’s novel is served up faithfully in a gripping fairytale that’s full of intrigue.
