Coraline

Haunting odd-ball tale comes to life on screen

YES, THAT’S CORALINE not Caroline, as this feisty young girl will be the first to correct you. This latest 3D animation centres around an eerie old house where Coraline has just moved with her parents. Based on the book by Neil Gaiman and directed by Henry Selick, of The Nightmare Before Christmas fame, the film has a decidedly spooky flavour.

With her irritable parents constantly glued to their computers, an inquisitive Coraline sets off to explore the house, counting windows and doors for want of anything better to do. On her search, she stumbles across a tiny door, which appears to be bricked up. However, that night the door magically opens to reveal a long tunnel. But this isn’t Mary stepping into The Secret Garden. Instead, this tunnel leads to an alternate universe where everything appears better than reality. Her Other Mother and Father dote on her and invite her to stay forever. But there’s a catch: to stay, she must agree to have her eyes replaced with buttons. Eek! Luckily, Coraline is nobody’s fool and instead she sets out to foil her Other Mother’s plan.
