The lovely Lily, aged eight
Dubbed ‘The Baker Celeb’, 27-year-old Lily Vanilli is quite possibly the hippest thing to happen in baking for some time. Cooking up a storm at a recent Downing Street charity event, she has also graced the cover of the Observer magazine. What’s got everyone so excited is that Lily doesn’t just bake yummy, pretty cakes and sweets, she is an alternative baker, a cake sculptress if you will. She bakes surreal treats to eat such as red velvet bloody heart cakes or a chess cupcake board. In between starring in the new Levi’s Craftworkers campaign, we caught up with the busy baker…
Where were you born and brought up?
In Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. We moved back to Croydon when I was 14
Do you have brothers and sisters?
I have three brothers and a sister (who is amazing… she has just become a mounty in Canada), my older brother Hardwin lives in London, Raimond is at Manchester University and my littlest brother is 15 and a genius.
What did you want to be when you grew up?
Do you have any particularly funny childhood memories?
I used to eat flowers – right off the trees or plant. I remember really clearly if I saw something beautiful I would check no one was looking and lean forward and chomp! I'm working on a whole series of recipes using edible flowers at the moment so maybe that’s related.
How did you get into what you do?
Obsessive reading, practice, experimenting, late late nights…
What do you do in your spare time?
Bake, read, ride my bike, pubs, general fun stuff, ghost-hunting and adventure.
Tell me three interesting facts about yourself
1. Three out of five of the children in my family can unicycle
2. I am obsessed with the ocean, octopus, squid, cuttlefish… all manner of cephalopod
3. I know karate.
