Where? The Algarve, in the country’s far south.

Why go there? For the beaches, the unspoilt countryside east of Faro and the year-round sun.

Children will love... A cross-country quad-bike trek. Book for older children through Quad Ventura. Meanwhile, all age groups will enjoy the sealions, seals and dolphins at Zoomarine Algarve.

Parents will love...The quad bikes, too! Plus the harvest from the Algarve’s fine vine-growing “terroir” and the many local festivals at which to indulge.

Stay at…The Vila Vita Parc Resort & Spa. Set in 54 acres of subtropical gardens on the Atlantic coast, this seaside oasis offers a crèche and children’s club, plus lots of activities for the whole family. Priced at £2,854 for a family of four staying seven nights in a two-bed suite.

We also like the Martinhal Resort in Portugal, a Highly Commended  family hotel in the Junior Design Awards 2012, and The Yeatman in Oporto, which offers the chance to sample some of the country's fine wines.
