Croatia
Why visit? Of all the countries in Eastern Europe, Croatia is the one that cries out “family holiday”. Not only is its beautiful coast bathed in crystal-clear waters and warm sunshine, but it is also endowed with enough islands and cultural nuggets to turn a seaside holiday into an Adriatic adventure. Base yourself in Dubrovnik and the children could be scaling the ramparts of the old city one day and paddling a sea kayak to a deserted cove the next.
Rocked by war in the early Nineties, Croatia’s tourism is back in top gear, whether you want to island hop along the Dalmatian coast or head inland to explore the freshwater wonder of the Plitvice Lakes National Park.
Where to stay Villa and apartment specialists like Croatian Affair have properties throughout the country, while holiday-camp operators feature northern Croatia. One of the best value is Camp Lanterna, near Porec, with three fabulous pools, sailing and canoeing. Prices from around £270 to £1,650 for 12 nights in a two-bed Villanova mobile home with Keycamp.
