At once blissfully calm and strikingly dramatic, the rolling fields of this country estate make a unique setting for the contemporary artworks of the Yorkshire Sculpture Park. The perfect antidote to the stuffy and staid traditional gallery environment, here families are free to wander through the park’s 500 acres without constraint, interacting with nature and modern sculpture alike. This combination of down to earth accessibility and a collection of sculptures by some of the leading artists of recent times creates a uniquely family-friendly modern art experience.
Star Attractions Get a closer look at the world’s most significant collection of work by pioneering local sculptor Henry Moore, seen exactly as the artist intended. Moore often spoke of the influence his Yorkshire upbringing had on his work, and of his desire to have his sculptures viewed against the beautiful natural landscape in this very setting. Over 100 acres of the country park are now dedicated to showing his many fascinating pieces, providing a sensory experience where all ages are invited to view, touch and feed their imagination.
Family X-Factor By dismantling the barriers between nature and sculpture, this day out is the perfect introduction to modern art for younger children. Whilst the formal environment of a gallery may be intimidating or confusing, the Yorkshire Sculpture Park encourages complete freedom and interactivity with both the art and the environment in which it is set. Encourage your child to touch and investigate the works from every angle and to explore the park’s hills, woodland, lakes and formal gardens, making exciting discoveries around every corner...
Not many people know this, but… The estate on which the park is built was once owned by the rather eccentric Sir Thomas Wentworth, who used to entertain his guests with firework displays, mock naval battles and copious amounts of alcohol.
