Seven Stories, Newcastle Upon Tyne

We’re sure there are more than just seven stories waiting to be discovered on the seven levels of this old Victorian mill, which has been transformed into a wonderful world dedicated to children’s literature. The exhibition programme takes its inspiration from some of the leading lights in the book business and children
can enter the world of make-believe with story-inspired activities. The centre also boasts original manuscripts and artwork from a whopping 30,000 children’s books.

Star attractions Life-size gorillas and an enchanted fairytale forest await visitors to the current Through The Magic Mirror exhibition (until March 14, 2012), which celebrates the work of former Children’s Laureate Anthony Browne. Or venture into Stig of the dump’s cave, mix spells in Meg’s cauldron and play Mr Big’s piano in the There’s Nuffin Like A Puffin exhibition, which takes a nostalgic look at over 70 years of brilliant Puffin books. In the Artist’s Attic, children can try on costumes and listen to stories, while the Creation Station in the basement is a hive of book-inspired artistic endeavour.

Family X-Factor Children can meet their literary heroes with frequent author storytimes. New Children’s Laureate Julia Donaldson, Judith Kerr and Oliver Jeffers are among those who have visited to date.

Not many people know this, but… Seven Stories is the home to Mr Tumpy’s Caravan – an unpublished manuscript by Enid Blyton, which hit the news early this year.
