Monkey around at Britain's premier simian sanctuary

It would be quite a feat to find a child (or indeed adult) who doesn’t have a soft spot for cheeky monkeys and affable apes. Lithe and lively, they simply love to lark around, but they also need our help and protection. Monkey World in Dorset helps to rehabilitate primates who have been the victims of smuggling, abuse and neglect, providing a natural living environment for monkeys and apes and a special day out for animal-loving families. Stroll at your own pace through the 65 acre sanctuary marvelling at the vibrant and vivacious characters enjoying their natural and peaceful living areas. Children will adore the mischievous nature of the inhabitants, who have even been spotted playing a game of tag with young visitors.

Star attractions Naturally, this day out is all about the animals. Among the many characters to look out for is  super-macho chimpanzee leader Butch, sweet-natured and shy gibbon Adidas, and punk-haired Tamarins Uncas and Alice. As well as being remembered by all who visit, the monkeys here are national celebrities with their very own television programme, Monkey Life. Inquisitive families can learn more about the 16 different species of primate within the sanctuary in a series of fun and fascinating talks throughout the day.

Family X-Factor The sprawling two-acre Great Ape Play Area within the sanctuary is the largest outdoor adventure play area in the South, providing ample opportunity to monkey around on variety of swings, slides and climbing frames.

Not many people know this but… Animal-loving lovers can now get married in the park under the watchful eye of Paddy the chimpanzee, who has a prime viewing spot from within his enclosure.

Don’t forget to pack Most of the 65 acre site is based outdoors so wear comfortable shoes and pack something waterproof for those famous British showers.

Special Events Help the residents of Monkey World to get their five-a-day from August 27–29, when every child who brings in a banana for the primates will receive a free badge.

Cost  £11.00 (adults) £7.75 (children and Senior citizen) £9.50 (concessions) £34.00 (family) £24.00 (single parent family). Under-threes are free.
