Kent And East Sussex Railway
The joy is the journey and the destination in this history-rich enclave of old England
The gentle chuff of the steam engine, the soothing clickety-clack of the wheels on the track, green fields slipping by… The 100-year-old Kent And East Sussex Railway offers the passenger a tranquil ride through this rural idyll, known as 1066 Country, with lots to see and do along the way. Leave your car and board the train at Tenterden station. Stop off at Northiam and call in at The Mill Toy And Pedal Car Museum, then take the next train to Bodiam and stroll to Bodiam Castle. The railway also hosts special A Day Out With Thomas events when children can board the Thomas The Tank Engine train.
Star attractions The pedal car models by Bugatti, Jaguar, Maserati and Lotus will excite speed demons large and small, although in reality their top speed is dependent on the ferocity of the driver’s legs... Bodiam Castle is every child’s idea of a moated storybook castle, with spiral staircases to surmount and battlements to storm. For a special treat, take a three-course Sunday luncheon aboard the railway’s Wealden Pullman.
Family X-Factor Bodiam Castle has fantastic grounds for picnic pursuits, and offers free tracker packs stuffed with games, quizzes and activities for children.
Not many people know this, but… The Mill Toy and Pedal Car Museum has the biggest collection of pedal cars in Europe.
Don’t forget to pack Some books by Reverend W Awdry to get you in the mood.
Special Events Learn the tricks of the trade with the special Knight And Princess Academy at Bodiam Castle August 9–10, 17–19, with dressing up and crafts.
