Long before Hallowe'en became a commercialised holiday, Northeners used to celebrate by throwing horse chestnuts onto a fire and predicting the future based on how the nuts exploded. Dress up in magical and macabre finery and have a crack at some traditional Halloween pursuits during these Nut Crack Night celebrations at Astley Hall in Lancashire, activities include singing, dancing and of course chestnut roasting.
Ghostly Galleon

Set sail on a spooky seafaring voyage aboard an Ullswater Steamer in Carlisle for this two hour Halloween Spooktacular event. Once on board the ghost ship families will encounter the wizard, Stu-Di-Doo who will be performing feats of illusion and creating balloon monsters to take home. Goody bags and spooky sweets will be available for all souls aboard as well as prizes for the best fancy-dress costumes.
