The Hounds of Falsterbo: Picture Book of the Year, Junior Design Awards 2014 HIGHLY COMMENDED

What the brand says, what the judges thought and where to buy...

 1 of 1

They Say:

An elegant non-fictional rhyming poetic tale set on the beach of Falsterbo in Sweden. Styled specifically with a hardback fabric de-bossed cover, designed to appeal to the grown up who would be thrilled to leave it out on the coffee table as the child with little hands who can easily turn the delightful board book pages.  The mixed media original illustrations offer a realistic yet charming representation of three dogs and the coastal landscape.  The edges have been sprayed sand to complete the visual harmony sweeping you away with the three furry princes in a naturalistic, charming and timeless encounter.

° Unique concept and styling. Combing an elegant feel to the books exterior whilst using high quality matt board book the design allows both children and parents to be able to enjoy the publication.  The book will not be safely stored away in a bookshelf for fear of torn pages or equally hidden away in away in a toy box due to its garish appearance.

° The book is without gimmicks. Through the eyes of three real dogs the tale encourages the simple pleasures of  life, for children to turn off their devices and take a walk outside to appreciate nature and seek adventure.

° The illustrations are all unique A3 compositions combining sketch, photograph, watercolor, oil pastels and collage all produced from life with a naturalistic realism in mind. The dogs were added in collage to create a charming  dynamism and no digital enhancements were used in the hope that the nature is felt directly by the reader.

° The poetic verse is written with vocabulary which considers readers from 2-8 years. The rhyming prose enables a toddler to enjoy the text when being read to and the sprinkle of more challenging words will engage a young reader beginning to read poetry independently.

° Book 1, of a series of 5, depicts reality. A map is included to illustrate the island geographically and dogs homes. The further books will follow the  seasons by the coast and the dogs adventures. The dogs can be followed on our website and social media.

Judges Comments:

"An amazingly elegant hardback book which would look just at home on a stylish coffee table, as on a children's bookshelf. It manages to strike that tricky balance between being beautiful yet still appropriate for and attractive to children. A sweet tale - we are looking forward to seeing the rest in the series."

Discuss this story

There is nothing better than a great illustrated book of immortally interesting drawings! Small children perceive 80% of the information visually, so it is so important that the drawings are pleasant, interesting and bright. Working as essay writers I rarely draw a pictures, but hope, that in the future, when I become professional writer, I will write some very nice and with a lot of pictures book for children.
