Shortlisted Most Promising New Talent 2012 - My Bear Griz by Suzanne McGinnes
It's bear hugs all round with a giant bear who's a boy's best friend
A young lad called Billy loves bear – in fact, he's even got his very own, a giant grizzly bear called Griz. The pair do everything together, exploring, playing, looking at the starry sky – and eating peanut-butter-and-honey sandwiches. In this stunning picture book debut, Suzanne uses a variety of pencils, pen and ink to create dramatic scratchy images. The pages also feature childish words of graffiti, like 'I heart peanut butter', to create a playful feel (and could fool parents that their child has been scribbling on the book, naughty, naughty!). A homage to the power of a young child's imagination – as the final image of Griz depicts him no longer as a giant grizzly bear, but as a cuddly soft bear!
