New York In Pyjamarama by Michaël Leblond and Frédérique Bertrand

New York In Pyjamarama by Michaël Leblond and Frédérique Bertrand (Phoenix Yard, £9.99) 3+

Cleverly using an old-school cinematic genre, très cool French duo Leblond and Bertrand have created a thoroughly modern picture book, where static images have been replaced by moving animation and interactive options. The dynamic energy here is not the result of digital wizardry, however, just a simple sheet of acetate which, when moved over the page creates movement known as the ombro-cinema technique. As our pyjama clad-hero explores the Big Apple, your child can make cars zoom along and the lights of Broadway glisten. Scene-stealing visuals aside, interesting typography mixing loud capital letters and soft lower-case prose adds to the frenetic evocation of the city that never sleeps. Unsurprisingly, this was France’s fastest selling picture book of 2011 – our crystal ball sees it selling out in a New York minute on these shores too.
