Meet the winner of our prestigious award for emerging talent, Yokococo
Yokococo’s story is a tale of not one, but two, cats: Matilda and Hans. Matilda is the archetypal paragon of virtue, a goody-two-shoes who sits quietly reading her book or diligently watering her plants, or generally doing good deeds, while Hans, on the other hand, is a mask-wearing miscreant who likes to make mischief at every opportunity. With a very simple narrative, it is Yokococo’s illustrations that really bring the book to life. They have a cartoon-like appeal, so much so that you can imagine them as an animation. Yokococo has a strong graphic style, and she uses a mix of colour to portray meek and mild Matilda, contrasted with mostly black and grey tones – accented with a cheeky red scarf – for naughty Hans.
