WHO: HERE WE ARE BY OLIVER JEFFERS
WHAT: Inspired by the birth of Oliver Jeffers' son, Here We Are is a moving and thought-provoking book in which Junior favourite Oliver takes the reader on a journey through a series of heartfelt notes introducing planet Earth. Oliver's signature wit and humour combine with a value system of kindness and tolerance to create a must-have book for parents.
WHY: This book swept the board on judging day and here are just some of the notes the judges left us: "One of my children’s favourite books, and authors. Just the loveliest books. My husband, an Educational Psychologist, also loves them." Sarah Clark (from Little Spree). Children's stylist Yvadney Davis said "Big fan of this author. The illustrations are beautiful and sparkle with imagination, humour and wonder. So much richness" and founder of Peanut Michelle Kennedy simply added "LOVE". Who are we to disagree?

WHO: POLITICS FOR BEGINNERS BY USBORNE BOOKS
WHAT: An informative guide to political systems, elections, voting and government, and issues including feminism, human rights, freedom of speech and fake news, all explained with clear text and bright, infographic style illustrations that make it essential reading for children (and parents).
WHY: There has never been a book that has helped children to understand politics in a more clear and entertaining way - nor has there been a more necessary time to do so. As Michelle Kennedy (from Peanut) said "Something every junior school should have - this is not a subject we should be leaving for history lessons!" and Junior Travel Writer and founder of Mini Travellers Karen Beddow added "A book I feel like most adults could read too!"

WHO: MY FIRST BOOK OF QUANTUM PHYSICS BY SHEDDAD KAID-SALAH FERRON & EDUARD ALTARRIBA
WHAT: My First Book of Quantum Physics is an entertaining illustrated guide (with no complex abstract mathematics), that clearly explains key concepts and big ideas of the fascinating, mysterious world of quantum physics in an accessible and child-friendly way.
WHY: Author Sheddad Kaid-Sala Ferrón is a science and physics enthusiast who teaches science to children and writes popular science books for children and adults. This book was of great interest during the judging day as our panel felt that it covered a tricky subject matter perfectly for children. Junior Travel Writer Karen Beddow simply stated "Love this!" in her notes and Junior Editor Bonita Turner added "THIS is THE children’s science book to educate and inspire children in 2018 and beyond - no bookshelf should be without it."

WINNER: BRONZE FOR BEST DESIGNED/ILLUSTRATED BOOK FOR CHILDREN
WHO: THE MAGICAL WOOD BY MARK LEMON
WHAT: The Magical Wood is a story about loss, friendship and hope. A story to help children suffering from the loss of a parent or loved one and working in collaboration with children’s bereavement charity, Winston’s Wish (where proceeds will be donated)
WHY: Having lost his father at a young age author Mark Lemon has used his own experience of bereavement to create a book that help young readers deal with the stages of grief. The judging notes were glowing with magical praise: Yvadney Davis (a top children's stylist) noted "Such a beautiful way to tackle a difficult subject." Michelle Kennedy (founder of the Peanut parenting app) said "Wonderful" and Little Spree founder Sarah Clark wrote "Lovely book, tackling a difficult subject for children."

WHO: FINGER PLAY & FACE PLAY BY ROUND GROUND
WHAT: A unique set of books from Korea that show different shapes through finger play (with play stickers to recreate) or face play (with facial expressions play cards) to stimulate children's imaginations.
WHY: Freely experience various emotions such as happiness, sadness, joy, anger, and longing by looking at the scenes in the picture book or use your hand to play these clever little books are beautifully designed and this is it's debut entry in the Junior Design Awards. Michelle Kennedy (from Peanut) said "Haven't seen anything like this, always want to find fun creative play."
