The forecasters have been predicting snow (and we are praying they are wrong!) but there was definitely a glacial look to the snowy backdrop at the Elsy AW11 catwalk show. With a tinkly, breathless version of Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star as the soundtrack, it was a flurry of patterned knits with a theme title Nordic Chic in tones of grey, navy and cream. Scandinavian patterned cardigans and sweaters were worn in layers over slim leggings and trousers in cream. With a retro 1950's feel and fur trims and additions, this felt a warm and cozy start to the collection.
The second theme Romantic Animalier featured mixed prints in ruffled skirts and dresses of chiffon, layered with cord and wool trousers and belted jersey tops for a boho peasant feel. Sleeves were puffed at the shoulder and chunky knits, leg warmers, shawls and belted coats in stone and cream completed the picture.
The third theme was New Grunge featuring plaid woolen jackets, bags, skirts in black and red for striking effect. This was mixed with denim pieces and padded shiny jackets in bright red and blue. A stand-out dress featured a patchwork style with Argyle and geometric patterns.
There was a hint of Breakfast At Tiffany and Audrey Hepburn for the finale with a parade of little black (and Cream) dresses for the party season in cream or black with an emphasis on sequins and ribbon bow decorations. In particular, a sequin tailored coat, worn with knee-high black socks and ballet pumps, was most desirable. Shapes were soft flares and puffed, sometimes sleeveless, with ruffles tumbling down front fastenings or around skirt hems. Finally, as predicted, the snow fell, in a glittering shower of silver sparkles, as the children returned to the stage, dancing to Katy Perry, singing Fireworks.
