The best picturebooks of 2013
Our month by month round-up of the best new books this year
Dressing up can be hours of fun, providing you can choose what to be – a cowboy, a witch or a ghost? That’s the dilemma in Ruby, Blue And Blanket (Scribblers, £10.99), the latest picture book from Old Bear creator Jane Hissey. The poor penguin in Helen Hancock’s Penguin In Peril (Templar, £10.99) would probably be glad of a disguise when three hungry cats kidnap him to catch fish for them. A hilarious sequence of events unfolds as our hero makes his escape and attempts to find his way home safely. Lunch isn’t quite so fraught in Belle & Boo And The Yummy Scrummy Day by Mandy Sutcliffe (Orchard, £6.99). But how can Belle convince her rabbit friend that fruit and vegetables are as tasty as cake? There is welcome return for old friends in Ant And Bee (Egmont, £4.99), whose alphabetical adventures have been lovingly re-illustrated by Angela Banner more than 60 years after the pair were first published.
