Measuring Angels by Lesley Ely and Polly Dunbar Frances (Lincoln, £6.99)

There’s upset in the classroom as Sophie becomes the victim of a bossy girl. Is it just a coincidence when it comes to a sunflower growing project that the teacher teams the pair together? There’s conflict at first and maybe the sensitive sunflower detects it, as it is weedy and spindly. Maybe it’s in need of some angelic intervention, as suggested by fellow pupil in the class, Gabriel – shades of the archangel, perhaps? When the girls construct a large paper angel, it seems to do the trick. A sweet, thoughtful story of friendship with soft illustrations.
