Too Big

By Ingri and Edgar Parin d’Aulaire, New York Review Children’s Collection, £8.99, from 18 months

The illustrations in this book make it a winner. In glowing primary colours, the author-illustrators tell a slightly confusing but charming story of a typical toddler feeling his way into the world. The little hero of the tale has a shock of blond hair, a devoted dog and frisky cat and is constantly being told he is too big to do lots of the things he’d like to do, but this doesn’t stop him daydreaming about growing up to be big enough to ride on an elephant.
