The Great Pet Sale by Mick Inkpen (Hodder, £6.99)

It's every critter-craving child's dream; a pet shop with a sign in the window proclaiming 'everything must go!'.  Inside the shelves are filled with a Noah's ark of living bargains - a friendly rat for a penny, a salamander, even a skink (which according to the bewhiskered sales assistant is a "sausage on legs"). This is a warm-hearted, nicely paced, lift-the-flap book containing more potential pets than you can shake a snake at.
