All Alone At Christmas by Justine Smith (Orchard Books, £4.99)

The pleading brown eyes of Milo the puppy are enough to send any child clamouring for a pooch of their own. And the prospect of this little cutie being left all alone on Christmas Eve is almost too much to bear. Milo’s owner Katie goes to stay at her cousins’ house and poor bereft Milo can’t fathom where she’s gone. When strange white creatures start falling down outside the window he’s even more spooked, until Suki the cat appears and leads him on a wintry walk.
