The Smartypants Guidebook by Elisabeth Brami and Serge Bloch (Seuil, £15.99)

You may not think your child needs any help in this particular area, but this rhyming handbook certainly offers some novel ideas for little pranksters. “Make your dad’s shave like a dream, replace the foam with sweet whipped cream” cajoles the lilting text, before proposing “adding a spider of blue plastic will make this angel cake fantastic!” We do love a little mischief-making here at Junior, especially when it’s packaged up with roguish scribbly illustrations and a chic Gallic colour scheme courtesy of Petit Bateau (in honour of their 120th anniversary) Of course, that’s not to say we advocate trying out the tome’s riskier stunts – put cola on our keyboard at your own peril, kids.
