A is for Awesome by Dallas Clayton (Walker, £12.99)

This is the alphabet, but not as you’ve ever seen it before. It’s been given an uplifting, hilarious and inspirational update by author and illustrator Dallas Clayton. Jam-packed with energetic doodles and bright eye-catching colours, each letter is given a rhyming line so that the whole book can be read as one long poem.

Apart from the obvious educational benefit in teaching children the alphabet, A is For Awesome also contains a sweet life-affirming message urging little ones to dream big and live life to the fullest. It’s great fun to read together with your child, and afterwards you can sit together and pour over the illustrations naming what you can see. Who knew the alphabet could be so much fun?
