The Story Machine by Tom McLaughlin (Bloomsbury, £10.99)

Coping with being a dyslexic child is undoubtedly tough. But author Tom McLaughlin - himself dyslexic - has written a wonderfully inspiring tale showing that dyslexia doesn't have to limit your potential, especially if you’re a born storyteller.

The Story Machine recounts the tale of Elliott, who is excited to find a strange typing machine. Unfortunately he's not very good with words and letters and he struggles to use it. But then Elliott suddenly realises he can make the letters look like pictures and then the pictures can become stories, and he lets his imagination run riot…

The Story Machine is a beautifully illustrated and engaging tale about the power of storytelling. Due to his own experiences as a dyslexic child, Tom is able to represent the frustration of Elliott's difficulty with words and letters in a way that's honest, authentic and utterly relatable. It’s a must for any children who are struggling with a developmental reading disorder.
