My Daddy’s Going Away by Christopher MacGregor (Random House, £6.99)

Based on the author’s own experiences of working away from home in the army, My Daddy’s Going Away, was written with the intention of helping families cope with paternal separation. It’s a comforting and supportive picture book, explaining why parents sometimes have to go away and simultaneously aims to help children cope with missing a loved one.

Rather than hone in on one profession, illustrator Emma Yarlett has ensured that the book has an all-encompassing reach by depicting a futuristic family. Together with Christopher’s heartwarming prose, My Daddy’s Going Away is an engaging and beautiful read. With a foreword by H.R.H The Prince Of Wales, the book is supported by Combat Stress, a charity which looks after those who have left the armed forces but are still affected by the things they have seen and experienced.
