Peck Peck Peck by Lucy Cousins (Walker, £11.99)

What a welcome burst of sunshine, just as the nights begin to draw in again – a new book from Maisy luminary Lucy Cousins.

This time the illustrator extraordinaire shows us a little birdy being taught to peck by her proud papa. “Practise hard and have some fun” advises the sage avian, at which our protagonist embarks on a riotous pecking spree, leaving a steadily mounting arrangement of holes on every page. Well, who could resist pecking “a nectarine, a green bean, an aubergine, and seventeen jelly beans” anyway? As you would expect from Cousins, the art is bright, exuberant and a feast for young and old eyes alike, children will also enjoy the rhythmic rhyming text and cheeky little bird’s rebellious ways.
