Junior Book Club: February 2013
Junior Book Club reveals the top literary lovelies this month
Alphabet by Alain Grée Button, £9.99, 2+
It’s no mean feat coming up with a fresh take on the well-worn ABC book formula, but très cool Parisian illustrator Alain Grée may just have pulled it off.
Using nostalgic Fifties-style illustrations to depict elements of the modern world, including an eco-friendly greenhouse and an iPad stargazing app, makes for a visual feast, full of hidden surprises revealed with each repeat browse.
Grée’s fondness for alliteration also throws up some brilliantly bizarre scenarios – how would your child
like to get aquainted with Ronnie, the rabbit who really likes reading? Or maybe Ian the Inuit boy who has received an invitation from India? A lush white ski-slope spread in rich saturated hues is the frosting on the cake for adults with an eye for visuals
