Horrid Henry's Holiday by Francesca Simon and Tony Ross (Orion Books, £4.99) 5+

To the familiar refrain of "Don't be so horrid Henry", the cheekiest chap of them all sets off with his parents, and of course Perfect Peter, for what promises to be a lovely family holiday. Except with Henry in tow, chaos and high jinks are never in short supply. A fun-filled book to encourage even the most reluctant reader.

Five On Treasure Island by Enid Blyton (Hodder, £4.99) 5+

For sunshine drenched adventures accompanied by lashings of ginger beer it's got to be the Famous Five, and where better to start with your child than with the very first book in the series. Join Julian, Dick, Anne, George and the ever faithful Timmy on a thrilling treasure hunt where time is of the essence.
