Sparky by Jenny Offhill (Orion Childrens, £10.99)

At one time or another, every parent will experience their child begging them for a family pet. One little girl gets her wish, but there's one condition - she must get a pet that doesn't need to be walked, bathed or fed, which is how she ends up with Sparky the Sloth.

Sparky is a heartwarming and funny tale, beautifully illustrated by Chris Appelhans who has worked on a number of animated films including Coraline, Fantastic Mr Fox and The Princess and the Frog. Full of charm and humour, it's the perfect book that will have readers of all ages laughing along. Warning: it may encourage younger readers to start pestering their parents for a pet sloth. Don't say that we didn't warn you!
