As well as being a practical skill – think of all those scarves, socks and jumpers you can create! – knitting is also a fun activity you can teach your children, or use to relax and socialise with other adults in knitting clubs. Visit www.ukhandknitting.com or www.knittogether.info for details of a knitting group or class near you.

The types of wool and yarns available has also come a long way – with a vast array of colours, sizes and textures to choose from. The British Wool Marketing Board website has details of some stockists of traditional British yarns at www.britishwool.org.uk as well as information about the Campaign For Wool.
